We stayed at the on-airport Wyndham hotel so didn’t make the 18km journey into Quito: but it does look interesting perched on the top of a crown of hills. Quito is the capital city of Ecuador. When you land at it’s airport you are immediately aware of the altitude which, at 2400m (7500ft) is the same as many European ski resorts. Yet it is regarded as low altitude for the Andes. It’s a clean fresh airport and the people were very welcoming. They sell lot of Panama hats here as they originate in Ecuador contrary to what you might imagine. Apparently they became a popular purchase by sailors when in Panama – presumably to use the canal. It’s made of some special reed and the finer the reed weave the more expensive the hat. I was a cheapskate but you can spend up to $500!
